DocuSky Collaboration PlatformOpen Access

DocuSky, developed by RCDH of National Taiwan University, is a collaborative platform for DH researchers, especially for Sinology.DocuSky is designated to coordinate the diverse needs of different research stages and to provide digital tools for DH researchers to build personal databases of her own research material. Researchers can also use digital tools provided in DocuSky for text processing, database construction, markup, text reorganization and contextualization, text mining, GIS, and visualization.

In addition to personal data, DocuSky allows the user to connect to publicly available large text databases such as CBETA, CTEXT, Kanripo through API, and to utilize popular tools such as MARKUS and Palladio. DocuSky already incorporated more than a dozen tools. New tools, contents, and services are also being added. DocuSky is available to the research community for free.

Taiwan History Digital Library (THDL)Registered Access

This database contains nearly 20,000 documents of “Tan-Hsin Archives,” 46,000 complete texts of “Ming-Qing Taiwanese Archives” and 40,000 pieces of “Taiwanese Old Deeds.” The “Tan-Hsin Archives” are the most completed collection of administrative and judicial documents from Hsin-chu Hsien, Tamsui Ting, and Taipei Fu dating from 1776 to 1895. The “Ming-Qing Taiwanese Archives” comprise official administrative documents concerning Taiwan during Min-Qing era, including the selected documents of the Monthly Memorial Copies, the Palace Memorials also the Imperial Edict from National Palace Museum’s holdings and the Grand Secretariat Archives from Academia Sinica. The “Taiwanese Old Deeds” cover nearly 40,000 complete documentaries consisting of the Governor General’s Office manuscript copies, the original “Lahodoboo Cultural Archives” as well as all sorts of civil deeds in Taiwan during Min-Qing era. The collection of the civil deeds is made up of mostly land deeds, and then followed by public/ private documents such as marriage and land registration papers.

This database provides full text search, advanced search, multi-facet classification, term frequency analysis, chronicled distribution, personal corpus for customizing information search and storage, and reference dictionary for notable personages.

NTU Digital Library of Buddhist StudiesOpen Access

NTU Digital Library of Buddhist Studies (DLMBS) is the premier index to journal articles, book reviews, and collections of essays in the field of Buddhism. DLMBS, the most comprehensive database of its kind, gives researchers instant access to over 410,000 records and 70,000 full-texts, with publications in 45 languages and 15 types of data. Our new “Buddhist Author Authority Database” provides users to search for the work lists of Buddhist researchers in the world. In addition, we also provide 17,715 digital Buddhist scriptures for users to download, and online teaching tools of Sanskrit, Tibetan, Pali and other languages. (Update: 2020/08)

Digital Archives Resource Center of NTU Open Access

Digital Archives Resource Center of NTU (DARC) is the portal to provide access to all digital resources created by the Digital Archive Project of National Taiwan University (NTU). There are 177,178 data entries at present in the portal containing materials such as Taiwanese cultural documents, specimens of flora and fauna, geological studies, archeological surveys, and historical documents of medicine. DARC also provides links to various databases, including NTU Library’s most important Taiwanese cultural documents such as the Manuscripts of Kanori Ino, Tan-Hsin Archives, the Yasusada Tashiro Collection, the V. S. de Beausset Collection, Lyric Books of Taiwanese Opera and Rubbings of Cultural Relics, with the temporal coverage from the Qing Dynasty, the Japanese Colonial Era, to the present day.

Users can use a keyword to search multiple databases simultaneously. This database also supports full text search and interoperability between heterogeneous databases.

Taiwan Ethnological Collections in Overseas MuseumsOpen Access

This site congregates many dispersed Taiwan ethnographic collections preserved in the famous European and American Museums. These overseas collections have been investigated and digitized through transnational cooperation. On one hand, they are materials representing cross-cultural encounters between Taiwanese people and westerners. On the other hand, they are precious samples enhancing our knowledge on early material cultures of Taiwan. Through this bi-lingual web-based database, we provide a channel to integrate and research for the scattered information of Taiwan ethnographic collections in the following overseas museums: British Museum; Pitt Rivers’ Museum, University of Oxford; Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology, University of Cambridge; Royal Ontario Museum; American Museum of Natural History; and Museum of Anthropology, University of Michigan.

National Repository of Cultural Heritage(New version)Open Access

National Repository of Cultural Heritage (NRCH), funded by the Council for Cultural Affairs (now the Ministry of Culture), is an integrated database that collects a century’s local cultural heritage on a national basis. The content of NRCH includes all forms of culture from art, music, literature, architecture, old photos, and poetry to archives representing colorful culture and diversified customs. This new version database includes over 600,000 entries in an interactive interface to provide images, descriptions and video. Users could observe multi-faceted search results with flexible, instinctive and visualized design. The purpose of the new NRCH is to make it the cultural repository for all citizens and broaden public access to cultural heritage.

This database provides post-query classification, Tag Clouds, and search history. Search results could also be examined in the form of timeline or GIS.

Context Discovery System for Lidaibao'anOpen Access

The Context Discovery System for Lidaibao’an was co-created by the National Taiwan University (NTU) Library and the NTU Research Center for Digital Humanities (RCDH). The content of the system, totally 3.3 million Chinese Characters divided into 4,294 entries, is based mainly on the 15 volumes of Lidaibao’an published by the NTU and supplemented by the edited version of Lidaibao’an published in Okinawa. Through full-text, identification of important words, normalization of dates and annotation, the system aims to create a research-oriented context analysis system that provides functions such as full-text search, post-query classifications, context discovery, and visualization. The annotations of extracted terms include person names, official names, objects, and places names, and normalization of dates. Geographic coordinates are also provided for place names so that locations can be visualized on a GIS system. The system not only provides access to the entire Lidaibao’an collection, but also enables users to retrieve, analyze and obverse these important historical materials in a versatile environment.

Aligned Reading of Three Commentaries of Chunqiu (AR3C)Open Access

This system aligns "Chunqiu" and its three commentaries: "Chunqiu Gongyang", "Chunqiu Guliang" and "Chunqiu Zuo". We use time anchors to align different paragraphs from these four books. Click on one paragraph in each book, the system will find the same time anchor in the other three books and align the event paragraph at the same time for users to read.

This system permits aligned reading and full text search. With time anchors in each book, users can read full text between Chunqiu and its three commentaries.

HistPlace Information ToolsOpen Access

The HistPlace Information Tools is built by The Research Center for Digital Humanities of National Taiwan University, which includes two tools and one API:

  1. "Historical Placename Query Tool": Providing historical place names in Taiwan and China. Users can export the query results for DocuGIS or other GIS tools.
  2. "HistPlace Reference Lookup Tool": Providing authority ID and coordinates of historical place names in Taiwan and China. Users can check and export these data for use.
  3. "TWGIS API": Building the TWGIS Taiwan historical place name database, and providing an API to access the data of the historical place names of Taiwan through specifying the place name or ID.

DanXin Archives System for Hakka Studies(DASH)Open Access

DanXin Archives System for Hakka Studies (DASH) is commissioned by Taiwan Hakka Culture Development Center of Hakka Affairs Council, and created by Research Center for Digital Humanities of National Taiwan University and NTU Library. The contents of the System mainly consist of the images and full-texts of the entire DanXin Archives. In addition to tagging the dates, persons, and artifacts in the documents, Hakka scholars also carefully analyzed the documents and enriched the content by tagging “Hakka ingredients” as well as adding a classification tree of Hakka Events. In doing so, DASH hopes to provide a digital analysis system that meets the research needs of Hakka studies, enrich Hakka research resources and enhance the Hakka studies scholarship.
The main content of DASH is derived from the DanXin Archives housed by National Taiwan University Library. The archival materials are comprised of administrative and judicial documents of Tamsui Ting, Taipei Prefecture, and Hsinchu County, dated between the 54th year of Qianlong reign (1789) and the 21st year of Guangxu reign of the Qing dynasty (1895). After reorganizing and editing, the Archives now has 1162 cases and 19,246 documents, which recorded the activities of Hakka in northern Taiwan during Qing rule. The content of the Archives reflects the contour of the everyday life of the Hakka people, thereby providing precious and valuable first-hand historical documents for research in Hakka cultural life.

This system permits full text search or metadata search and has featured many extended functions such as text mining, textual analysis and visualization, prefix/suffix analysis, post-classification, statistical analysis, category tree, timeline chart, pie chart, and tag clouds.

Leishu Knowledge Inquiry SystemRegistered Access

This database contains two of the most important traditional Chinese Leishu, “Yiwen Leiju” and “Taipin Yulan.” The “Yiwen Leiju Collection” is divided into 46 categories and 734 subjects and consists of 14,572 entries with roughly 1 million words, which are gathered from the original edition of Ouyang Xun in 624 A.D. (Tan dynasty). The “Taipin Yulan Collection” contains 65,633 entries, divided into 55 categories, 4,066 subjects and 1,531 sub-subjects and in total about 4 million words from the compilation of lead editor Li Fang in 984 A.D. (Song Dynasty).

Leishu Corresponding Inquiry SystemOpen Access

This system currently presents the “Yiwen Leiju Collection” and the “Taipin Yulan Collection.” “Yiwen Leiju,” completed in 624 A.D. with Ouyang Xun as lead editor, consists of roughly 1 million words. ”Taipin Yulan,” completed at the hands of lead editor Li Fang in 984 A.D., 25 years after the establishment of the Song Dynasty, is comprised of over 4,000,000 words. “Yiwen Leiju”and”Taipin Yulan” are both massive in volume though different in scale. However, both were commissioned by the imperial court at the beginning of the respective regimes and compiled thorough in completion, so they would provide the best examples for understanding Leishu as a genre and the information they contain.
The purpose of the system is to provide researchers who are interested in traditional Leishu to compare and analyze the structure and content of the database’s collections. Furthermore, the system also offers a chance for more in-depth observation on the knowledge classifications and their reflective ideology changes in each Leishu.

Searching System of Official Positions in the Qing Dynasty and List of People Open Access

This query system provides an interactive application to search official positons, officer names, and bureaucratic hierarchy based the book “Offices and Personnel in the Late Qing Period,” published by Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica. The book provides a completed list of high-ranked civil and military officials of central and provincial governments, such as Grand Secretariats and the other cabinet members; Governor and Governor-General; Military Commanders and General-in-Chief; and so on.
With the system, users can easily perform search functions to retrieve the bureaucratic hierarchy maps, the list of all official positions, or the list of bureaucrat names in all position in certain year between 1786 and 1912. The system is a friendly interface for users who are interested in exploring the structural change and evolving history of Qing’s official hierarchy.

Academia Historica Digital Archives Search SystemOpen Access

This system was created by the Academia Historica and the RCDH. It contains 13 Fonds of important archives, over 55,000 documentaries and 6,600,000 digital objects, all of which dating from 1893 to 2001. The content covers collections of former Presidents and governmental archives, including the artifacts of President Chiang Kai-shek, President Chiang Ching-kuo, Vice President Chen Cheng, Vice President Hsieh Tung-min and President Lee Teng-hui; archives of Wang Zhao-ming, archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, archives of the National Resources Commission, and archives from the Department of Land under the Taiwan Provincial Government. These materials are rich references for investigating contemporary political development and major events. This database also enables the public to search within archives of presidential artifacts, files of notables, and rare pictures.

Digital Repository of Taiwan Provincial AssemblyRegistered Access

This database contains Taiwan Provincial Assembly archives, official bulletins and parliamentary session notes. In the database, 464,037 metadata are derived from 62,852 documents in 263 volumes, 1.8 million pages in total. Dating from 1946 to the 20th of December 1998, the entire archives consist of the early post war Taiwan Provincial Congress, the processor of Taiwan Provincial Assembly. Also included are the written records of public affairs between Taiwanese provincial parliament and the Governor General’s Office, Taiwan Provincial Government, and several provincial governments in China. The database is not limited to official documentaries but also provides records of public opinions and correspondences between administrative departments. It is an invaluable research resource for investigating provincial congress issues and Taiwan democracy movement.

Digital Library of Local Councils JournalsOpen Access

Digital Library of Local Councils Journals is a database that contains parliamentary archives of city/county councils in Taiwan. Currently it contains nearly 1.3 million metadata and more than 2 million images, with further expansion and data update expected.
Originated and dated from 1946 to present days, these journals are complete documentaries recording each council session that provides an important image on the society, economy and politics of the past representing interactions between administrative departments and public opinions, as well as an important context of the development of democracy in Taiwan. Additionally, they stand as invaluable references for research on contemporary government policy, institutional reform, democratic politics and parliamentary studies.

MHB Newspaper Clippings Archives Search SystemOpen Access

This database contains newspaper clips gathered by the Historical Data Bureau and the Military History Bureau from the Xiamen University Library’s collections. There are currently 257 volumes (64 volumes composed by the Historical Data Bureau and 193 volumes by the Military History Bureau), nearly 40,000 news articles originated from 1946-1947, covering subjects such as politics, economy, diplomacy, education, geography, personage, major events, etc. These clips are collected from over 30 prominent newspapers of the era, such as Da Gung Bao, Central Daily News, Shun Bao/ Shanghai News, Yi Shi Bao, Da Gang Bao, Xin Wen Bao, Qian Xian Ri Bao, Wen Hui Bao, etc.

This database provides post-query classification, search history recording, and search options to include/exclude specific conditions.

Social Movement Archives from ChiLin FoundationOpen Access

The Database of Social Movement Archives from ChiLin Foundation comprises news-clips and editorials dating from 1957 to 2006, covering subjects such as politics, society, environmental protection and human rights. These materials are rich references for understanding Taiwan’s political turmoil and social movements. As of 2008, there are currently 150,000 data (approx. 20,000 newspaper clips, 125,000 magazine clips) and nearly 400,000 full-text image links. Regular data update and expansion is expected.

This database provides multi-facet search and post-query analysis for statistical data.

Taiwan Colonial Court Records ArchivesRegistered Access

This database contains 5,645 volumes of legal case documents from the courts of Taipei, Xinzhu, Taizhong and Jiayi. The records include official court verdicts on criminal cases, crime case registers, records of non-contentious matters and files on law enforcement. Civil notarial certificates, registration of juristic persons, and administrative archives are also included. There are 309,811 metadata and 2,471,579 images in this database. The records span from 1895 to 1945 and constitute a complete record of the 50 year operations of the Taiwanese justice system while under Japanese jurisdiction.

Taiwan Colonial Empirical StatisticsOpen Access

This database comprises the digital collections of 1895-1945 published statistical books which are housed in both NTU library and National Taiwan Library. The database contains 681 volumes of publications, 103,732 metadata and 194,075 images, pertaining to subjects of law, politics, social issues, economy, culture and education.

This database provides search by volume/metadata, post-query classification, search history recording and search options to include/exclude specific conditions, and full-text imagery browsing/downloading.

NTU Institutional Repository (NTUR) Open Access

This database houses NTU’s research papers from journals, conference, research reports, as well as lecture slides and teaching materials which have been digitized for preservation and made available for online access. There are currently 208,577 entries with 77,763 full-text documents available. (Update: 2015/10)

This database provides search by category/keywords. Full-text browsing are available for some works.

NTU Web Archiving System (NTUWAS) Open Access

With the increase of online information resources, there is a compromise in ease and speed, which has proven the main hindrance to the promulgation of digital archives, with the necessity to preserve information remaining priority. This web database intends to facilitate access to digital resources, providing links to over 6,300 websites with sections including NTU websites, governmental organizations, education resources, art and literature websites, ethnic groups, NGO organizations, election campaigns, indigenous movement campaign, the Olympic Games and academic websites. This database provides full text search and advanced search. It also includes theme stories arranged by issues, events, categories and date.

Taiwan Shakespeare DatabaseOpen Access

This database is an open-access online archive of Taiwan’s Shakespearean productions, with both English and Chinese user interfaces. It casts theatre works in historical and cultural context, presenting not only streaming video of performances with bilingual subtitles but also production background, interviews, publicity materials, designs, photos, news coverage, reviews, essays, etc. All data is annotated in both English and Chinese: each production comes with a concise introduction and related materials are given a brief abstract.

Yunnan Folk ArchivesRegistered Access

This database contains 893 entries of land deeds, gathered by Associated Professor Ruizhi Lian of National Chiao Tung University (NCTU). Dating from 1671 to 1949, these deeds are originated from regions in Yunnan province, PROC, such as Nanjian, Weishan, Binchuan, Yuxi, Yunlong, Eryuan, Xiangyun, Baoshan and Heqing, etc.

This database provides full text search and personal corpus for customizing information search and storage.

Kuomintang (KMT) Party ArchivesOn-site Access

This database contains digital archives from the Kuomintang (KMT) History Museum. The collection includes the “Classified Archives,” the “Wuhan Archives,” the “Political Figures Correspondence,” the “Five Divisions Archives,” and the “National Defense Committee Archives.” Dating between 1912 and 1944, those archives include confidential documents during the Second Sino-Japanese War, hand written correspondence of KMT officials, and records kept by the Wuhan central office during the period of Ninghan Separation (KMT division into Nanjing and Wuhan faction). The database also includes original archives from the five divisions of workers, farmers, youth, women and businessmen in KMT Party’s central administration.

This database provides metadata search, term frequency analysis and post-query classification.

NTU MuseumsOpen Access

Currently there are ten museums within the NTU Museums Group, including the Gallery of National Taiwan University History, the Museum of Anthropology, the Geology Museum, the Heritage Hall of Physics, the Insect Museum, the Agricultural Exhibition Hall, the TAI Herbarium, the Zoology Museum, the Museum of Archives, and the Museum of Medical Humanities. While keeping a close relationship with the departments to which they belong, the members of NTU Museums are currently connecting with each other within the campus community. From now on, NTU Museums are open to the general public to experience the beauty and richness of the collections.

Tan-Hsin-Tang-An Knowledge NetOpen Access

The Tan-Hsin Archive is a collection of administrative and judicial documents from Hsin-chu Hsien, Tamsui Ting, and Taipei Fu dating from 1776 to 1895. The research related to these documents is rarely noted due to difficulties in interpreting the original historiography. This project provides an interface for online learning through comprehensive introduction to the documents and research materials and flexible interaction. The project includes two units: "Lessons" and "Knowledge Base." The “Lessons” unit introduces 1) types of documents, 2) the format of a file, and 3) administrative procedures in specific cases. The “Knowledge Base” unit relates the Tan-Hsin Archive to its bibliography, related essays, reviews, dissertations, and advanced readings.
